When the irradiated cells finally progress into S phase, however, they usually synthesize DNA at normal rates. The same observation has been made for cells irradiated during the stage of DNA synthesis. For example, a dose of about 500 rads delivered to synchronous HeLa cell populations in S phase reduced DNA synthesis by 50% with prolongation of S phase . Very little effect on DNA synthesis occurred after irradiation in other phases of the cell cycle. Overall, total DNA synthesis was essentially normal .
