Batch processing and especially processes that require ultrahigh vacuum are unlikely to allow very low cost device fabrication. Two approaches attracting current interest are reel-to-reel coating and ink-jet printing. The latter offers the attractive promise of a non-lithographic device patterning process. There are, however, significant issues to be addressed before these techniques can be used as general processing methods.
