Wilson Knight, who rate it as "probably the subtlest and greatest play in Shakespeare" (Knight in Neill, p. 1). Early critics, measuring it against Aristotle's unities of time, place, and action, predictably enough tended to be Events in History at the Time the Play highly unfavorable. Few, if any, of Shakespeare's Was Written plays disregard Aristotelian unities to the extent that Antony and Cleopatra does.
